Network World Comcast launches first public U.S. trial of advanced DNS security Comcast unveiled on Tuesday an aggressive plan to deploy new DNS security mechanisms that are designed to protect Web site operators and consumers from a specific type of hacking attack that involves hijacking Web traffic and redirecting it to bogus sites.
IEEE An Economic Framework for Dynamic Spectrum Access and Service Pricing The concept of dynamic spectrum access will allow the radio spectrum to be traded in a market like scenario allowing wireless service providers (WSPs) to lease chunks of spectrum on a short-term basis. Such market mechanisms will lead to competition among WSPs where they not only compete to acquire spectrum but also attract and retain users. Currently, there is little understanding on how such a dynamic trading system will operate so as to make the system feasible under economic terms.
IEEE PRIME: Peer-to-Peer Receiver-Driven Mesh-Based Streaming The success of file swarming mechanisms such as BitTorrent has motivated a new approach for scalable streaming of live content that we call mesh-based Peer-to-Peer (P2P) streaming. In this approach, participating end-systems (or peers) form a randomly connected mesh and incorporate swarming content delivery to stream live content. Despite the growing popularity of this approach, neither the fundamental design tradeoffs nor the basic performance bottleneck...

- Ericsson MMS
success to drive 3G take-off (5/03) The success of MMS sets
the stage for a 3G take-off by changing user behavior, moving people
away from SMS and creating demand for Mobile Internet services. Once
people are regularly using mobile multimedia services, there will be a
natural rise in demand for the higher bandwidth offered by WCDMA
systems such as video streaming and video telephony.
- Ericsson Be
first, be cheap, be clever (2/03) What operators need from
developers is a rich range of MMS services, says Ericsson Marketing
Strategist Ian James. These will help lead to a fundamental change in
user attitudes to 3G. James has just completed an in-depth report on
strategies for success for operators to increase MMS revenues. The
report opens with an in-depth analysis of Sha-mail, Japanese operator
J-Phone’s hugely successful picture messaging service, and the
lessons European operators could learn from its success.
- WBT Profiting from Mobile Multimedia Services (2/03)
If the success of Short Messaging Service (SMS) is any indication, the
delivery of Multimedia Messaging Services (MMS) will likely create
explosive demand for 2.5G and 3G mobile data services. Rapid adoption
of SMS was a surprise success and those providers that offered early
services captured the market.
- Independent CU L8R: Americans reply to joy of text leaves
Americans cold (9/02) Depending on your point of view, mobile
phone users in the US are missing out on one of life's simplest
pleasures or else wisely avoiding one its most annoying new trends –
phone texting. New figures suggest that while 19 billion messages were
sent worldwide last year by texting – or Short Message Service (SMS)
– barely any of them were sent in the US, which is a
virtualtext-free zone. Part of the problem was that until last April
many of the country's mobile phone networks, notoriously well behind
those in Europe, were unable to carry text messages. And American
phone companies have not been marketing the joys of texting someone:
"CU L8R".
- eMarketer What's Hype and What's Happening with Multimedia
Messaging (8/02) Wireless World Forum estimates that only 1%
of total wireless message volume will be attributed to multimedia
messaging by 2004. The Wireless World Forum bases its estimates on
interviews with participants in its 3,000-person membership of
industry executives. The Forum notes that the MMS market and relevant
revenue will not match the media hype surrounding its launch.
- Northstream Wholesale SMS Market
Analysis (10/01) (PDF) The success of SMS can be attributed to
certain unique features of SMS like message storage if the recipient
is not available, confirmation of short message delivery and
simultaneous transmission with GSM voice, data and fax services. There
is no doubt that the growing trend towards the usage of SMS in bulk
has created a window of opportunity to generate substantial revenues
from wholesale of SMS.
- Northstream When will
video be delivered to my phone? (10/01) (PDF) Analysis of
Mobile Video Services. Current technology development and enhancements
both on the mobile terminals and the wireless network side will soon
enable new ways for personal communications. Among the new services
and applications that are feasible with the introduction of next
generation networks and terminals, mobile video services will mean a
substantial change to the way mobile users share their experiences and
emotions, access to information and entertainment, and communicate
with other people. This white paper aims to analyse the current and
future position of the mobile video services market. It includes all
key aspects of offering wireless video services, from handset and
network video related technologies and standards to the mobile
operators’ plans for introducing mobile video services.
- MindBranch Are short messaging
services poised for a quantum leap forward? (7/01) (PDF) SMS

over one billion messages despite very little marketing efforts. Who
is driving the Market? Upcoming short-messaging technologies, Enhanced

- FlashCommerce Mobile Operators and SMS Will Revolutionize
Payments on the Internet (5/01) Making money from the Internet
has proven to be harder than one would think. This especially finds
expression in the sites that are providing information, content and
services. Between 1998 and 2000, during the height of the dot.com
wave, talk of charging users was taboo. Focus was entirely on securing
as much traffic as possible and the best way to achieve this was to
give away content for free. Much has happened in the past year and the
Klondike days have past. The question is not whether to charge but
when and how micro-payment is best implemented.
