company faces the many challenges of trying to keep pace with
rapidly changing technologies. Mercedes-Benz was the first
automobile manufacturer to offer an integrated telematics system
- called Tele Aid - in all its vehicles sold in the United
States. The system transmits the precise location of the vehicle
(through GPS tracking) as well as the model of car and its
color, which helps EMS and police identify the vehicle quickly.

has to be planned and the dispatcher needs to be notified when

at head office and the mobile unit.

Tuned Up For In-Car Wireless Gadgetry (5/02) Consumers who
want in-car wireless systems are more interested in things like
navigation and emergency services than e-mail access and
personalized content, according to a telematics report.
Forty-five percent of 1,961 people who responded to a Jupiter
survey said they would pay for navigation services in their car,
44 percent would go for emergency services and 36 percent were
interested in remote monitoring. On the other hand, just 12
percent showed a interest in paying for in-car e-mail, calendar
and voice-mail services, Jupiter said.
